About NIFTY 500

The Nifty 500, officially called the Nifty 500 Total Market Index, was launched on January 1, 1995, by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. Its main purpose is to provide a comprehensive view of the Indian equity market, covering large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap companies. The index tracks the performance of the top 500 listed companies on the NSE, selected based on free-float market capitalization and liquidity.

As of 2025, the Nifty 500 represents about 96.1% of the free-float market capitalization and 96.5% of the total turnover on the NSE. This makes it one of the most comprehensive and diversified equity indices in India, giving investors a broader sense of the market’s overall direction.

What is NIFTY 500 Based On?

The Nifty 500 Index is calculated based on the free-float market capitalization of its constituents. This means it only considers the shares that are available for public trading, excluding promoter and other locked-in holdings. The index selects the top 500 companies by total market capitalization from a filtered list of NSE-listed stocks. This ensures a diverse mix of sectors and company sizes, giving investors a broad view of the Indian equity market.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in NIFTY 500

Stocks are selected for inclusion in the Nifty 500 based on the following criteria:
  1. The stock must be listed and traded on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
  2. It should be part of the eligible universe, filtered based on average daily turnover and market capitalization.
  3. Companies are ranked based on full market capitalization, and the top 500 stocks are selected.
  4. The index uses a free-float market capitalization weighting method, meaning only publicly available shares are considered while excluding promoter holdings.
  5. Liquidity is also a key factor; stocks with very low trading activity may be excluded.
  6. Sectoral balance is maintained to ensure broad market representation across large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap segments.

How Often Do Stocks in NIFTY 500 Change?

The Nifty 500 Index is reviewed and rebalanced semi-annually, with cut-off dates on January 31 and July 31 each year. During these reviews, stocks are evaluated based on their average six-month market capitalization and liquidity data.
Companies that no longer meet the required criteria may be removed, and eligible new companies are added. NSE Indices Limited provides at least four weeks' advance notice before implementing any changes, giving investors time to adjust their portfolios.

Who Maintains the NIFTY 500 Index?

NSE Indices Limited, owned by the National Stock Exchange of India, is responsible for maintaining the Nifty 500 Index. NSE Indices oversees the calculation, periodic rebalancing, and maintenance of the index. It follows a transparent and rules-based approach that aligns with international index management standards. The organization ensures that the Nifty 500 remains accurate, up-to-date, and reflective of the Indian equity market.

What NIFTY 500 Tells Us?

The Nifty 500 Index gives a complete picture of how the Indian stock market is performing across all segments - large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap stocks. It covers about 96% of the free-float market capitalization on the NSE (as of 2025), making it a strong indicator of overall market sentiment and economic trends.
Movements in the index reflect broader investor behaviour, sector rotations, and shifts in risk appetite. Fund managers, analysts, and retail investors use the Nifty 500 to track the health and direction of the Indian equity market.

Is NIFTY 500 a Benchmark?

Yes, the Nifty 500 is a widely accepted benchmark for the Indian equity market, especially for funds and products that aim to capture the entire market’s performance.
It is often used by multi-cap mutual funds, broad-based ETFs, and portfolio managers as a reference point to measure returns and manage risk. Its wide coverage across market caps and sectors makes it a preferred choice for assessing overall market trends and portfolio performance.
