About NIFTY FMCG

Launched on September 22, 1999, the Nifty FMCG is a sector-specific index created by the NSE to track the performance of India’s top 15 Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies. These companies manufacture essential, non-durable products such as food, beverages, personal care, and household items that are consumed regularly. The index acts as a key indicator of the FMCG sector’s overall health, market trends, and investor sentiment.

What is NIFTY FMCG Based On?

Using the free-float market capitalization method, the Nifty FMCG Index counts only the shares open for public trading and leaves out promoter-held and restricted shares. Each company’s weight in the index is based on its free-float market value. The index level indicates the sum of the free-float market capitalization of all its stocks, compared to a set base period value. This ensures the index reflects the true investable portion of the FMCG sector.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in NIFTY FMCG

Stocks in Nifty FMCG are selected on the following criteria:
  1. Companies must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review.
  2. If there are fewer than 10 eligible FMCG stocks in the Nifty 500, additional companies are selected from the top 800 based on average daily turnover and market capitalization.
  3. Only companies classified under the FMCG sector are considered.
  4. Stocks must have traded on at least 90% of trading days in the last six months.
  5. A minimum listing history of one month is required as of the cutoff date.
  6. The final selection of 15 companies is based on their free-float market capitalization.
  7. At the time of rebalancing, the weight of any one stock can’t go over 33%, and the total weight of the top three stocks must stay below 62%.

How Often Do Stocks in NIFTY FMCG Change?

The index is rebalanced on a semi-annual basis, with cut-off dates set for January 31 and July 31 each year. For the review, average data from the preceding six months (ending on the cut-off date) is considered. Any changes to the index composition are announced at least four weeks in advance, giving market participants sufficient time to adjust their portfolios.

Who Maintains the NIFTY FMCG ?

Nifty FMCG is owned, managed, and maintained by NSE Indices Limited, which is a part of the National Stock Exchange of India. NSE Indices handles the index’s construction, calculation, periodic review, and dissemination. The index operates under a structured committee system to ensure transparency, objectivity, and alignment with global best practices in index management.

What NIFTY FMCG Tells Us?
