About NIFTY Midcap 100

The Nifty Midcap 100 is an equity index managed by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. It tracks the performance of 100 mid-sized companies that come right after the big players of the Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50, based on market capitalization. Launched in July 2005, this index gives investors a way to measure and track how India’s mid-cap companies are performing. These companies usually offer a mix of moderate risk and good growth potential, making them popular among investors looking for diversification with growth opportunities.

What is NIFTY Midcap 100 Based On?

The Nifty Midcap 100 Index is calculated using the free-float market capitalization method. In simple terms, this means it only considers the shares that are available for public trading. Shares held by promoters, the government, or locked-in investors are excluded. The index compares the total free-float market value of its 100 stocks to a set base period to arrive at the index value. This approach ensures the index truly reflects the part of the market that investors can actually trade.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in NIFTY Midcap 100

Here’s how stocks get selected for the Nifty Midcap 100:
  1. First, a stock must be part of the Nifty Midcap 150 universe at the time of review.
  2. All 50 stocks from the Nifty Midcap 50 Index automatically get included.
  3. The remaining 50 stocks are chosen based on two things: their average free-float market capitalization and their average daily turnover over the last six months.
  4. Only equity shares are considered; no warrants, convertible securities, or other instruments.
  5. Stocks also need to meet minimum liquidity and trading frequency standards so that there’s enough buying and selling activity.
  6. Like the index itself, stock weightage is based on free-float market capitalization; only publicly tradable shares matter.

How Often Do Stocks in NIFTY Midcap 100 Change?

The Nifty Midcap 100 Index is reviewed and rebalanced twice a year, with cut-off dates on January 31 and July 31. During each review, stocks are checked for their six-month average free-float market capitalization and average daily turnover. Companies that no longer meet the criteria are replaced with new ones that do. Investors get a four-week advance notice before any changes come into effect. This regular review ensures the index stays up-to-date with the changing mid-cap market landscape.

Who Maintains the NIFTY Midcap 100 Index?

The Nifty Midcap 100 is handled by NSE Indices Limited, which operates under the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. NSE Indices is responsible for the calculation, periodic review, rebalancing, and dissemination of the index. It follows a transparent, rules-based methodology aligned with global best practices.

What NIFTY Midcap 100 Tells Us?

The Nifty Midcap 100 Index reflects the overall performance and sentiment of India’s mid-cap equity segment. It tracks the price movement of 100 actively traded mid-sized companies across various sectors. Since mid-cap stocks typically offer higher growth potential but with increased risk compared to large-caps, changes in the index often signal shifts in investor risk appetite and market outlook.
A rising Nifty Midcap 100 suggests growing investor confidence in India’s mid-sized businesses, often seen during bull markets or economic expansion phases. On the other hand, a declining index can indicate caution or risk aversion among investors.

Is NIFTY Midcap 100 a Benchmark?

Yes, the Nifty Midcap 100 is a popular benchmark for tracking the performance of India’s mid-cap stocks. It’s widely used by mutual funds, ETFs, and portfolio managers to compare returns and manage risk in mid-cap-focused investment products. The index acts as a standard for measuring how well mid-cap funds are doing and helps investors assess the overall health and trend of the mid-cap segment.
