About NIFTY Smallcap 100

The Nifty Smallcap 100 is a stock market index that tracks the performance of 100 actively traded small-cap companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. Launched on March 30, 2011, with a base date of January 1, 2004, it started with a value of 1000. It gives a snapshot of how India’s small-cap companies are doing in the market. It’s a useful tool for both investors and fund managers who want to keep an eye on this fast-growing and often dynamic part of the equity market.

The index strikes a balance between the Nifty Smallcap 50 and the Nifty Smallcap 250, making it a handy reference for anyone wanting to track small-cap performance more closely.

What is NIFTY Smallcap 100 Based On?

The Nifty Smallcap 100 is calculated using the free-float market capitalization method. This simply means that only the shares available for public trading are counted; shares held by promoters or locked-in investors are left out. Each company’s weight in the index depends on the market value of its freely tradable shares. This approach ensures the index gives a fair and realistic picture of the investable part of India’s stock market.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in NIFTY Smallcap 100

Here’s how the stocks are chosen in Nifty Smallcap 100:
  1. All companies from the Nifty Smallcap 50 automatically become part of this index.
  2. Additional stocks are selected from the Nifty Smallcap 250, based on their full market capitalization and average daily trading turnover.
  3. Companies must meet minimum liquidity and trading frequency standards to make sure their shares are easily tradable.
  4. Stocks may be excluded if their market cap ranking drops below 180 in the Nifty Smallcap 250, or if their average daily turnover ranking falls below 130 among the top 180 stocks.
  5. The index also focuses on sectoral diversification, including companies from various industries.

How Often Do Stocks in NIFTY Smallcap 100 Change?

The Nifty Smallcap 100 is reviewed and rebalanced twice a year, usually in January and July. Stock inclusion and exclusion are based on updated market capitalization, liquidity, and trading activity, using a six-month average. A four-week notice is given before any changes are implemented. This helps keep the index aligned with the most relevant and tradable small-cap stocks in India.

Who Maintains the NIFTY Smallcap 100 Index?

The Nifty Smallcap 100 is managed by NSE Indices Limited, a part of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. They’re responsible for calculating the index, reviewing it regularly, and making updates whenever needed. They also ensure that the latest index data is available for everyone to track. The entire process is done in a transparent and systematic way, following global standards for index management.

What NIFTY Smallcap 100 Tells Us?

The Nifty Smallcap 100 captures the performance of India’s small-cap segment by tracking 100 companies ranked between 251st and 350th by market capitalization within the Nifty 500 universe. It provides investors with exposure to high-growth potential businesses across various sectors, often representing companies in the early stages of their growth journey.
While small-cap stocks included in the index are generally more volatile and carry higher risk compared to large- and mid-cap stocks, they also offer the potential for significant capital appreciation. The index’s performance is influenced by broader economic conditions and market sentiment, making it a useful indicator of investor confidence and emerging business trends in the Indian equity market.

Is NIFTY Smallcap 100 a Benchmark?

Yes, the Nifty Smallcap 100 is a well-recognized benchmark for India’s small-cap segment. It is commonly used by investors and fund managers to track and evaluate the performance of small-cap mutual funds, ETFs, and other investment products. The index helps in comparing returns, assessing risk, and making informed investment decisions in the small-cap space. It also promotes greater transparency and standardization within this segment of the Indian equity market.
