About NIFTY Smallcap 250

The Nifty Smallcap 250 is a diversified equity index launched by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on April 1, 2016, with data going back to April 1, 2005, as its base date. It tracks the performance of 250 small-cap companies listed on the NSE. These companies are ranked between 251st and 500th by full market capitalization within the Nifty 500 universe.

However, it specifically excludes stocks that are already part of the Nifty 100 (large-caps) and Nifty Midcap 150 (mid-caps). The goal of this index is to give investors broad exposure to India’s small-cap space, typically home to emerging businesses with high growth potential across various sectors.

What is NIFTY Smallcap 250 Based On?

The Nifty Smallcap 250 is calculated using the free-float market capitalization method. Simply put, this means it only takes into account the shares that are available for public trading. Shares held by promoters or locked-in investors are excluded. The index value reflects the combined free-float market value of all 250 stocks relative to a fixed base market cap. This approach ensures the index accurately represents the investable and tradable portion of India’s small-cap segment.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in NIFTY Smallcap 250

Here’s how stocks are selected for the Nifty Smallcap 250:
  1. The stock must be listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
  2. The company should rank between 251st and 500th by full market capitalization within the Nifty 500 universe.
  3. Stocks that are already part of the Nifty 100 (large-cap) and Nifty Midcap 150 (mid-cap) indices are not included.
  4. The index follows the free-float market capitalization method to decide stock weightage.
  5. Companies must also meet minimum liquidity and trading frequency requirements to ensure that there’s enough market participation.

How Often Do Stocks in NIFTY Smallcap 250 Change?

The Nifty Smallcap 250 Index undergoes a semi-annual review and rebalancing, usually conducted in January and July each year. The selection is based on updated data related to market capitalization, liquidity, and trading activity.
Companies may be added or removed based on their rank within the Nifty 500 universe and their eligibility criteria. NSE Indices provides a four-week advance notice before implementing any changes, giving investors time to adjust their portfolios.

Who Maintains the NIFTY Smallcap 250 Index?

NSE Indices Limited, owned by the National Stock Exchange of India, is responsible for maintaining the Smallcap 250 index. NSE Indices is responsible for the calculation, periodic review, rebalancing, and dissemination of the index. The organization follows a transparent, rules-based methodology aligned with global index management standards to ensure the index remains relevant and accurate.

What NIFTY Smallcap 250 Tells Us?

The Nifty Smallcap 250 Index gives investors a broad view of how India’s small-cap companies are performing. Movements in this index reflect market sentiment, risk appetite, and investor confidence in emerging businesses.
Since small-cap stocks are more volatile and sensitive to market changes, the index acts as a useful indicator of shifting trends in this segment. A rising index often signals growing interest in high-growth, smaller firms, while a decline may reflect risk aversion. Fund managers and investors track it closely for small-cap fund performance and sector analysis.

Is NIFTY Smallcap 250 a Benchmark?

Yes, the Nifty Smallcap 250 is considered an important benchmark for India’s small-cap equity segment. It is widely used by mutual funds, ETFs, and other investment products focused on small-cap stocks. Portfolio managers use the index to compare returns, assess risk, and measure the performance of small-cap focused portfolios. Its broad coverage of 250 companies makes it a reliable reference point for evaluating small-cap investment strategies and tracking market trends within this segment.
