NSE to launch Brent Crude Futures from April 13, 2026

The new futures contracts will be available for trading with effect from April 13, 2026, with the launch calendar indicating multiple monthly contracts extending up to 2027. The development is a major step in the process of India becoming more deeply integrated into the global commodity markets and is timed with the current spotlight on crude oil prices. Here we will explore this new Brent Crude Futures contract in detail.What are Dated Brent Crude Oil (Platts) Futures contracts?The new contract will be traded under the symbol BRCRUDEOIL and will be aimed at satisfying the increasing need for advanced risk management instruments in the energy market. It will be traded from Monday to Friday with sessions starting at 9:00 am and ending at 11:30 pm or 11:55 pm, depending on the US daylight saving time. Brent crude is the global benchmark for oil pricing, especially in Europe, Africa, and some parts of Asia, and affects the pricing of two-thirds of the globally traded crude supplies. This is the first Brent-linked futures product to be offered on a domestic exchange to Indian traders, as until now, Indian traders did not have direct access to a Brent-linked futures product, which makes this launch a significant addition to the commodity derivatives segment of the Indian stock market.These futures contracts will represent 100 barrels of Brent crude oil, and the prices will be quoted per barrel. The tick size or minimum price movement is one Indian rupee. The traders will be allowed to place orders of up to 10,000 barrels at a time, and individual traders can have open positions of up to 400,000 barrels, which is 5% of the total market-wide open position. While the members of the exchange can hold larger positions of up to 4 million barrels or 20% of the market-wide open position.These contracts are pegged to the S&P Global Energy (Platts) Dated Brent assessment, which is one of the most widely used physical crude benchmarks globally. A strict 6% base daily price limit will be applied initially. If this limit is breached, trading will pause for 15 minutes before the limit is widened to 9%, with further relaxations available in increments of 3%, if extreme international volatility demands it, with prior notice given to the market.How will these contracts be settled?One of the main characteristics that makes this contract accessible to a large number of market participants is that it is cash-settled. The contracts will be settled in cash, and the final settlement price will be calculated as the monthly simple average of Platts Dated Brent assessments in rupee terms. Conversion will be done using the RBI monthly simple average USD/INR reference rate of the respective contract month. This implies that traders do not have to be concerned with the physical delivery of oil, which is a major practical benefit to both retail and institutional traders. As the official reference rate of the RBI is used to convert currency, it also brings about transparency and eliminates the chances of disputes over exchange rate calculation.Why does this contract launch matter for India?The launch of Dated Brent Crude Oil (Platts) futures contracts is especially consequential because India relies heavily on imported crude oil. The introduction of these contracts will offer Indian market participants exposure to global crude benchmarks, increased volatility, enhanced hedging efficiency for refiners, importers, and institutional traders, and easy price discovery in domestic commodity markets by connecting them to international prices, thus boosting traders' participation in India’s commodity derivatives segment. To retail traders, this contract provides a new instrument that offers exposure to global energy prices directly from a domestic, SEBI-regulated platform, without the complexity of overseas trading accounts. With the launch of these contracts, NSE, which currently holds 16% of the WTI crude contracts, is aiming to grow its hold to more than 30%.
