4. What is the difference between Algo Trading and High-Frequency Trading (HFT)?

All HFT is algo trading, but not all algo trading is HFT. Algo trading is automated rule-based trading, i.e. buy when RSI < 30. Its frequencies can be low, a few trades a week. In contrast, HFT is a subset of algo trading that relies on ultra-low latency execution. It executes thousands of orders within milliseconds to take advantage of minute differences in price. HFT requires expensive infrastructure (e.g. co-location servers) and is primarily used by institutions.

Backtesting involves testing a strategy on historical data to ensure that it will work before taking on real capital in real-time market conditions. It simulates how the strategy would have performed in the past. If a strategy shows consistent losses in backtesting, then it will probably result in losses in live markets, thus saving the trader from potential financial loss.
