In India, there is no minimum amount for opening a trading or demat account. Trades can be executed from as low as Rs 100 for low-priced stocks. For derivatives trading, SEBI increased the minimum contract size for F&O to Rs 15 lakh, thus making the leverage products more capital-intensive as compared to equity delivery. Thus, beginner traders can start their trading journey with equity delivery with low capital and then proceed to derivative trading after gaining experience to avoid substantial losses.

For opening a trading and demat account with a SEBI-registered broker, the required documents are a PAN card, an Aadhar card, address proof, a cancelled cheque or bank statement, a photograph, and Video KYC (to be done from the broker's website).

3. What is a demat account and a trading account?

A demat account (dematerialised account) is an account to store purchased securities in electronic form. A trading account is used to execute buy/sell orders. Both accounts are interlinked; the trading account executes the trade while the demat account delivers the securities (for delivery trades) or releases the securities (for sale trades).

4. Is trading in India safe for beginners?

Intraday profits are taxed in India as a speculative business income as per Section 43(5) of the Income Tax Act. It is taxed as the trader's profit and gain from business or profession and taxed according to the trader's income tax slab (5% to 30%), not as capital gains.
