About BSE IPO

The BSE IPO Index, officially known as the S&P BSE IPO Index, is a strategy index launched by the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on August 24, 2009. It is designed to track and measure the performance of companies that have recently gone public on the BSE through initial public offerings (IPOs). What makes this index unique is its specific focus on the post-listing performance of newly listed companies, especially during their critical first year on the exchange. It provides investors and analysts with valuable insights into how IPO stocks are performing in the early stages after listing.

What is BSE IPO Based On?

The BSE IPO Index uses a free-float market capitalization-weighted method, considering only the shares available for public trading and excluding promoter-held and locked-in shares. It tracks companies that have listed on the BSE through an IPO, monitoring their performance for up to two years after listing. This approach ensures the index reflects the actual investable value and market sentiment toward these newly listed companies, without being influenced by large promoter holdings.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in BSE IPO

Stocks included in the BSE IPO must meet the following conditions:

Only companies listed on the BSE through an IPO are eligible for inclusion.
Stocks are added from the month following their listing and remain in the index for up to two years.
Companies must meet minimum trading frequency and turnover requirements to ensure liquidity and investability.
Only those with sufficient free-float market capitalization are considered, with a minimum float-adjusted market cap of ₹100 crores based on the issue price.
No single stock can weigh more than 20% to avoid overconcentration.
The index always maintains at least 10 companies.
Stocks are removed after completing two years post-listing or if they fail to meet liquidity and market cap criteria during reviews.

How Often Do Stocks in BSE IPO Change?

The BSE IPO Index undergoes a monthly review and rebalancing process. Newly listed IPOs that meet all eligibility criteria are added, while companies that have completed two years since their listing or no longer meet liquidity and market capitalization standards are removed. This regular update ensures the index remains fresh and accurately reflects the performance of India’s newest listed companies in the equity market.

Who Maintains the BSE IPO ?

The S&P BSE IPO Index is managed and maintained by Asia Index Private Limited, a joint venture between S&P Dow Jones Indices and BSE Limited. Asia Index oversees every aspect of the index, including its construction, calculation, regular reviews, and data dissemination. The index follows a transparent set of rules and is monitored by dedicated oversight committees, ensuring fairness, accuracy, and alignment with global standards in index management.
