About India VIX

The India VIX, short for India Volatility Index, reflects the market’s expectation of short-term volatility. Simply put, it indicates how much the stock market is likely to fluctuate soon. It is based on the Nifty 50 Index options and reflects how much volatility traders expect over the next 30 calendar days.

Introduced by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in July 2010, India VIX is often referred to as the “Fear Gauge.” It helps market participants understand the level of risk or uncertainty in the market. A higher India VIX reading typically indicates rising fear or market instability, while a lower value suggests calm and stable conditions.

What is India VIX Based On?

The India VIX calculation pulls data from the Nifty 50 options order book on NSE’s derivatives segment. Using the Black-Scholes model, it estimates expected volatility based on factors like the Nifty index level, strike prices, time to expiry, risk-free interest rate, and bid-ask prices of near and next-month options.
Rather than tracking stock prices, India VIX reflects the implied volatility, or how much movement traders expect in the market over the next 30 days.

Who Maintains the India VIX Index?

India VIX is maintained and calculated by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. It uses a customized version of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) VIX methodology, adapted for India’s market structure and trading behaviour. The NSE ensures real-time, accurate calculation of the index while upholding transparency and global standards. It also manages the ongoing dissemination and regulatory compliance of the index.

What India VIX Tells Us?

India VIX indicates the market’s expectation of volatility over the next 30 calendar days. It doesn’t predict market direction (up or down), but rather how sharp the movements might be. A high VIX suggests growing uncertainty or fear in the market, usually in response to events like elections, economic reports, or global tensions. A low VIX reflects a calmer market mood, where investors feel more confident and expect fewer sudden moves. Traders and fund managers use India VIX to assess risk, adjust strategies, and prepare for potential market shifts.

Is India VIX a Benchmark?

India VIX is not a benchmark index like the Nifty 50 or sectoral indices and isn’t used to measure fund or portfolio performance. Instead, it acts as a volatility index, showing how much movement the market expects in the Nifty 50 over the next 30 days. Though not used by mutual funds or ETFs as a benchmark, traders and institutions rely on India VIX for risk analysis, options pricing, and building volatility-based strategies. It provides valuable insight into overall market sentiment and expected uncertainty.
