About Nifty Bank

Nifty Bank, commonly known as the Bank Nifty or Nifty Bank Index, is a sectoral index managed by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. Launched on 15 September 2003, the index captures the performance of 12 of the largest and most liquid banking stocks from both public and private sector banks in India. The index serves as a key benchmark for the banking sector and is widely used for portfolio benchmarking, sectoral analysis, and trading through futures and options contracts.

What is Nifty Bank Based On?

Nifty Bank is built on the performance of 12 leading banking stocks listed on the NSE. The index is calculated using the free-float market capitalization method, which simply means it only takes into account the shares that are actually available for public trading, leaving out promoter and locked-in shares.
This ensures that the index reflects the actual investable portion of the market. As a result, Nifty Bank offers a realistic view of how India’s most influential banks are performing in the stock market.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in Nifty Bank

The Nifty Bank Index consists of banking stocks selected based on the following important criteria:
  1. The company must be classified as a bank as per NSE’s sector classification.
  2. It should be listed on the NSE for at least one calendar month prior to the index review date.
  3. The stock must have traded on at least 90% of the trading days in the past six months.
  4. Selection is based on free-float market capitalization, considering only publicly available shares.
  5. No single stock can weigh above 33%, and the combined weight of the top three stocks is capped at 62%.
  6. The stock must be available in the Futures & Options (F&O) segment.
  7. Only stocks that are part of the Nifty 500 index are eligible.
  8. Stocks must have a high average daily turnover and market capitalization.

How Often Do Stocks in Nifty Bank Change?

The Nifty Bank index is reviewed twice a year, once in January and again in July, based on average data from the past six months. Any changes are announced with a four-week notice. In special cases like mergers or delistings, interim adjustments may be made to keep the index accurate and reflective of the current banking sector.

Who Maintains the Nifty Bank?

The task of managing and reviewing the Nifty Bank Index falls to NSE Indices Limited, part of the National Stock Exchange of India. It handles the index’s calculation, periodic rebalancing, and ongoing maintenance. NSE Indices ensures the index remains accurate and reliable by following a transparent, rules-based methodology aligned with global standards.

What Nifty Bank Tells Us?

Nifty Bank reflects the overall performance and sentiment of India’s banking sector. Because banks play a key role in credit availability, interest rate transmission, and economic growth, the index often acts as a leading indicator of broader market and economic conditions. A rise in Nifty Bank suggests strong banking fundamentals, improved earnings, and investor optimism, while a decline may point to stress in asset quality, rising rates, or slowing credit demand.

Is Nifty Bank a Benchmark?

Yes, Nifty Bank is considered a key benchmark for India’s banking sector. It is widely used by mutual funds, ETFs, and institutional investors to track and compare the performance of banking stocks. The index also serves as the underlying for Bank Nifty futures and options, which are among the most actively traded derivatives on the NSE. Its popularity makes it an essential tool for sectoral analysis, trading, and investment strategies.
