About BSE Mid Cap

The S&P BSE Mid Cap Index tracks the performance of mid-sized companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). This index was launched on April 11, 2005. It serves as a benchmark for India’s mid-cap segment, companies that fall between large-cap and small-cap in terms of market size. It typically includes firms ranked from 101st to 250th by market capitalization and represents the middle 15% of the total market cap within the BSE AllCap index. They combine growth potential with reasonable stability, which appeals to many investors.

What is BSE Mid Cap Based On?

The BSE Mid Cap Index is calculated using the float-adjusted market capitalization of its stocks. It only considers shares that are available for public trading, excluding promoter and locked-in holdings. Companies are selected based on defined criteria like market size and liquidity, making sure the index accurately represents the investable mid-cap segment on the BSE.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in BSE Mid Cap

Stocks are selected for inclusion in the BSE Mid Cap Index based on the following criteria:
  1. The company must be listed and actively traded on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
  2. It should fall within the mid-cap range of the BSE AllCap Index, just below the large-cap segment and above the small-cap segment.
  3. The index uses float-adjusted market cap, counting only publicly traded shares.
  4. The stock must meet minimum liquidity standards, including trading frequency and average daily turnover.
  5. Companies with positive net worth and compliance with BSE's governance and disclosure norms are preferred.

How Often Do Stocks in BSE Mid Cap Change?

The BSE Mid Cap Index is rebalanced annually every September, with additional quarterly reviews conducted in December, March, and June. Companies are added or removed based on updated market cap, liquidity, and trading activity. This helps keep the index relevant and aligned with changes in the mid-cap segment.

Who Maintains the BSE Mid Cap Index?

The BSE Mid Cap Index is managed by Asia Index Private Limited, a company formed by the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and S&P Dow Jones Indices. It takes care of calculating, updating, and reviewing the index regularly. It uses a clear, rules-based method that meets global standards to ensure the index truly represents the performance of India’s mid-cap companies.

What BSE Mid Cap Tells Us?

The BSE Mid Cap Index shows how mid-sized companies in India are performing. When the index rises, it usually signals investor confidence and growth in the mid-cap space. A drop may reflect cautious market sentiment or economic slowdown. Since mid-cap stocks balance risk and growth, the index helps investors understand changing risk appetite and spot emerging opportunities in the broader market.
Due to their higher volatility, small-cap stocks help reflect changing risk appetite in the market. Investors and analysts use the index to spot new trends, growth opportunities, and how smaller companies are reacting to economic shifts.

Is BSE Mid Cap a Benchmark?

Yes, the BSE Mid Cap Index is a recognised benchmark for tracking the performance of mid-sized companies in the Indian stock market. It is commonly used by mutual funds, ETFs, and institutional investors to measure how well their mid-cap investments are doing. By offering a standard point of comparison, it helps assess returns, understand market trends, and guide investment decisions within the mid-cap space.
