About Gift Nifty

GIFT Nifty is a futures contract based on the Nifty 50 index, but it is traded internationally in US dollars. It operates on the NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) located in GIFT City, which stands for Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, situated in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

This index officially replaced the SGX Nifty (which was previously traded on the Singapore Exchange) as of July 3, 2023. The goal behind GIFT Nifty is to provide global investors with easier access to Indian equity futures while maintaining trading within India’s regulatory framework.

What is Gift Nifty Based On?

GIFT Nifty is linked to the Nifty 50 index, which tracks 50 of the biggest and most actively traded companies on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. It allows investors to take positions on India’s top stocks but through an internationally accessible futures contract. It uses the free-float market capitalization method, meaning companies with more publicly available shares and higher market value carry greater weight in the index.
Since GIFT Nifty is based on the Nifty 50 and traded in US dollars at NSE IX in GIFT City, it moves in sync with the Nifty 50. Any rise or fall in the Nifty 50 is reflected almost instantly and proportionately in GIFT Nifty futures contracts.

Who Maintains the Gift Nifty?

GIFT Nifty is maintained by the NSE International Exchange (NSE IX), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It operates from GIFT City and is responsible for the calculation, governance, and day-to-day operations of the index.
The regulatory framework for GIFT Nifty is overseen by two key authorities: the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), which regulates all financial activities within GIFT City, and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which serves as the primary regulator for India’s capital markets.

What Gift Nifty Tells Us?

GIFT Nifty acts as a real-time global indicator of Indian market sentiment. Since it trades for nearly 21 hours a day, it reflects how international investors are reacting to global events, such as US Fed decisions, geopolitical developments, or economic data, before Indian markets open. Its movement often signals the likely direction of the Nifty 50 index at market open. Institutional investors use it for overnight hedging and risk management.
High volumes and strong liquidity in GIFT Nifty point to rising global participation in Indian equities. This makes it a reliable tool not just for tracking market sentiment, but also for forecasting trends and building trading strategies around the Nifty 50 index.

Is Gift Nifty a Benchmark?

GIFT Nifty is not a formal benchmark for Indian mutual funds or ETFs, which typically use indices like the Nifty 50 or Sensex to measure their performance. Instead, GIFT Nifty is a futures contract based on the Nifty 50 and is mainly used by global investors.
It helps fund managers and institutions monitor overnight market sentiment, manage risk, and prepare trading strategies. With extended trading hours, it provides early indicators of market direction before Indian markets open.
