Please Note:

Global financial markets are closely interlinked, and it is important to know how global markets are performing to make informed investing and trading decisions. Global Indices on Dhan offers a real-time snapshot of major stock market indexes from around the world, helping Indian investors stay updated with international market trends and gauge global economic sentiment.

Whether market participants are tracking the U.S. markets, European markets, or Asian markets, all global indices provide them with LTP, % change and several other metrics of leading global indices, all in one consolidated view.

What are global indices?

Global indices are statistical measures that reflect the performance of selected groups of major stock exchanges across the world. Each index covers companies from a specific country or region and gives insight into the overall health and direction of that market segment.
For example, the S&P 500 is used to capture the performance of the 500 largest companies in the USA, whereas the Nikkei 225 reflects the performance of the Japanese equity market. Other important global indices are the FTSE 100 in the UK, DAX in Germany and Hang Seng in Hong Kong.
These indices help investors to measure the performance of the global markets at a glance and are often used as benchmarks for international economic trends.

How do Global Indices impact the Indian stock market?

The Indian stock market does not exist in a vacuum; it is influenced by global economic and market developments. Thus, the global indices impact the Indian stock market through:
  • Sentiment spillover: A positive or negative trend in major global indices, such as the S&P 500 or the Nikkei, often has a spill-over impact into the Indian market. Strong global cues can increase investor confidence in India and vice versa.

  • Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) Flows: FIIs are major players in the Indian market. Their investment decisions are often based on global market conditions and the performance of their home markets or other international indices.

  • Commodity prices: Global economic activity is represented by these global indices, which have an impact on commodity prices. As India is a net importer of many commodities, even small fluctuations in commodity prices can affect profitability and overall economic growth and thus the Indian stock market.

  • Currency movements: Volatility in the global markets can result in fluctuations in currency valuations. A weakening rupee with respect to the dollar, which is often determined by global sentiment, can affect the cost of imports and competitiveness of exports for Indian companies.

Why is tracking Global Indices important?

Tracking the global indices is important for several reasons:
  • Early indicators: They act as early indicators of potential movements within the Indian stock market. For example, a rally in the Asian market may indicate a positive opening in the Indian stock market.

  • Risk assessment: The knowledge about global market conditions can assist investors in estimating overall market risk. Declines in prominent global economies might signal a warning in local markets.

  • Diversification strategy: For those who would like to diversify their portfolio globally, it would be helpful to track the various global indices regularly

  • Economic insight: Global indices provide valuable economic insight into the condition of other economies and their impact on the Indian stock market.

How to invest in world indices from India?

Investing directly in foreign indices is not possible, but there are several ways for Indian investors to gain exposure:
  • International ETFs: The International ETFs track the performance of global benchmarks such as the S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100.

  • Fund of Funds (FoF): These are Indian mutual funds that invest in international funds.

  • LRS (Liberalised Remittance Scheme): Under the LRS, Indian residents can remit up to $2,50,000 per financial year for investment in foreign stocks, bonds or real estate. This permits direct investment in global markets, but the investment is done in individual stocks and not directly in the index itself.

Investors should also consider currency risk, tax implications and investment horizon when planning global exposure.
