India VIX

The India VIX calculation pulls data from the Nifty 50 options order book on the derivatives segment of NSE. Based on factors like the Nifty index level, strike prices, time to expiry, risk-free interest rate, and bid-ask prices of near and next-month options, it uses the Black-Scholes model in estimating the expected volatility.

India VIX is maintained and calculated by the National Stock Exchange of India. The calculated methodology of India VIX is a customised version of the CBOE's VIX methodology, adapted for the market structure and trading behaviour of India. It ensures real-time and accurate calculation of the index while upholding the standards for transparency and global best practices. It also manages ongoing dissemination and regulatory compliance of the Index.

India VIX shows the market's expectation of volatility over the next 30 calendar days. It does not indicate the direction of the market, but it gives an idea of the intensity of the movement. A high VIX indicates rising uncertainty or fear due to events such as elections, economic reports, or global tensions. A low VIX indicates a calmer market where investors are more confident and expect less sudden movement. Traders and fund managers would take India VIX to gauge the risk, modify their strategies, and get prepared for any sudden shift in the market.

India VIX is not a benchmark index like Nifty 50 or sectoral indices and is not used for measuring the performance of any fund or portfolio.
