About Finnifty

The Nifty Financial Services Index, commonly known as FINNIFTY, is a sectoral index launched by the National Stock Exchange of India. Launched on September 7, 2011, the index covers major stocks from the financial services sector, including banks, NBFCs, insurance companies, housing finance firms, and other financial institutions in India. The index comprises 20 of the most liquid and large stocks in the financial segment listed on the NSE. It is designed to provide complete insight into the overall health of the financial sector and emerging trends.

What is Finnifty based on?

FINNIFTY is a free-float market capitalisation-weighted index and comprises the 20 constituent stocks from the Financial Services sector. Only the shares that are open for public trading are considered, while promoter-held and locked-in shares are excluded from the calculation. The index includes a mix of companies like banks, NBFCs, insurance providers, and housing finance firms. Its calculation reflects the collective market performance of India’s key financial institutions.

Selection criteria for stocks in Finnifty

The selection criteria for FINNIFTY constituents are as follows:
  1. Stocks should form part of the Nifty 500 index to ensure that they are part of India’s actively traded and investable universe.
  2. The stocks that will qualify will be in the industry of financial services, i.e., banks, NBFCs, insurance, and other financial institutions.
  3. The index consists of up to 20 major financial services firms, according to the free float market capitalisation.
  4. To diversify the index, the weight of a single stock cannot be more than 33%, and when the index is rebalanced, the weight of the top three stocks should not be more than 62%.

How often do stocks in Finnifty change?

The FINNIFTY is revised and rebalanced semi-annually(twice a year), and the cutoff dates are January 31 and July 31 of each calendar year. Here, the eligibility and ranking of securities are calculated based on the average data of the past six months. It will also be announced at least four weeks before any changes are made to the index composition, so that investors can prepare.

Who maintains the Finnifty index?

FINNIFTY is a part of the National Stock Exchange of India and is maintained and run by NSE Indices Limited. The calculation and review of the index, not revising it, is the task of the NSE Indices, which is to have a clear and transparent methodology, rules-based. It also conforms to international standards of index management in order to make FINNIFTY a true reflection of the financial services industry.

What Finnifty tells us?

FINNIFTY provides investors with an understanding of the trends in the Indian financial services sector, which is one of the main pillars of Indian economic growth. In comparison to other banking indices, FINNIFTY not only tracks banks, but also NBFCs, insurance companies, and housing finance companies. This results in an inclusive and reflective indicator of the financial sector.
Its actions are closely monitored as the barometers of credit demand, consumer confidence, and the effects of regulatory or policy changes in the financial space. The popularity of the index among professional traders in the options and futures markets makes it one of the key instruments used in hedging and speculative strategies in the financial markets of India.

Is Finnifty a benchmark?

Yes, FINNIFTY is a reputed benchmark in the financial services industry of India. FINNIFTY is the performance benchmark of the mutual funds, ETFs, and other investment products. It is a point of reference for institutional investors and portfolio managers to make their return comparisons, risk exposure analysis, and strategic decisions on sector-specific investments. As a benchmark, it is transparent, and thus, institutional investors can monitor, compare, and evaluate investments in the financial sector more readily.
