About Finnifty

FINNIFTY, officially known as the Nifty Financial Services Index, is a sectoral index introduced by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. Launched on September 7, 2011, the index tracks the performance of companies from India’s financial services sector, covering banks, NBFCs, insurance companies, housing finance firms, and other financial institutions. The index includes 20 highly liquid and large financial stocks listed on the NSE. Its goal is to offer a comprehensive snapshot of the financial sector’s overall health and emerging trends.

What is Finnifty Based On?

FINNIFTY is based on the free-float market capitalization of its 20 constituent stocks from the financial services sector. Only the shares open for public trading are considered, with promoter-held and locked-in shares excluded from the calculation. The index includes a mix of companies like banks, NBFCs, insurance providers, and housing finance firms. Its calculation reflects the collective market performance of India’s key financial institutions, giving investors a focused view of the financial services segment.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in Finnifty

The selection criteria for FINNIFTY constituents are as follows:
  1. Stocks must be part of the Nifty 500 index, ensuring they belong to India’s actively traded and investable universe.
  2. Eligible stocks should belong to the financial services sector, including banks, NBFCs, insurance companies, and other financial institutions.
  3. The index includes a maximum of 20 leading financial services companies, selected based on their free-float market capitalization.
  4. To keep the index diversified, the weight of any single stock can’t go beyond 33%, and the total weight of the top three stocks is capped at 62% during each rebalancing.

How Often Do Stocks in Finnifty Change?

FINNIFTY undergoes a review and rebalancing twice a year, with cut-off dates set for January 31 and July 31. The process uses average data from the previous six months to determine the eligibility and ranking of stocks. Any changes to the index composition are announced at least four weeks in advance, giving investors time to adjust.

Who Maintains the Finnifty Index?

The FINNIFTY index is maintained and managed by NSE Indices Limited, a part of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). NSE Indices is responsible for calculating, reviewing, and updating the index as per a transparent, rules-based methodology. It ensures that FINNIFTY accurately reflects the financial services sector by aligning its processes with global index management standards.

What Finnifty Tells Us?

FINNIFTY gives investors a clear picture of how India’s financial services sector is performing, which is a key driver of the country’s economic growth. Unlike regular banking indices, FINNIFTY doesn’t just track banks; it also includes NBFCs, insurance companies, and housing finance firms. This makes it a more complete and balanced indicator of the overall financial sector.
Its movements are closely tracked as indicators of credit demand, consumer confidence, and the effects of regulatory or policy changes within the financial space. Additionally, the index is widely used by professional traders in options and futures markets, making it a key tool for both hedging and speculative strategies within India’s financial markets.

Is Finnifty a Benchmark?

Yes, FINNIFTY is a well-recognized benchmark for India’s financial services sector. Mutual funds, ETFs, and other investment products that focus on the financial sector often use FINNIFTY as a reference to measure their performance. Portfolio managers and institutional investors rely on this index to compare returns, assess risk exposure, and design sector-specific investment strategies. As a benchmark, it ensures transparency and makes it easier for investors to track, compare, and evaluate financial sector investments.
