About NIFTY Metal

The Nifty Metal Index is a sectoral benchmark, launched on July 12, 2011, that tracks the performance of India’s metals and mining sector. It comprises up to 15 of the largest and most actively traded metal and mining companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), covering key segments like aluminium, copper, zinc, iron & steel, and precious metals. The index offers investors and analysts a focused view of sector trends, demand cycles, and the overall market sentiment towards the metal industry

What is NIFTY Metal Based On?

The Nifty Metal Index follows the free-float market capitalization model, meaning only shares available for public trading are included, while promoter and restricted shares are excluded. The index level represents the total market value of these stocks compared to a fixed base value. This method helps ensure that the index offers an accurate and investable snapshot of the metals and mining sector, capturing real-time market sentiment and performance.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in NIFTY Metal

Stocks in the Nifty Metal index are selected based on the following criteria:

Companies must be listed on the NSE and be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review.
If fewer than 15 eligible stocks are available, additional companies are selected from the top 800 based on average daily turnover and market capitalization.
Only companies classified under the metals and mining sector are eligible.
Stocks must have traded on at least 90% of trading days during the previous six months.
Each company must have a minimum listing history of one month as of the cutoff date.
Final selection of stocks is based on free-float market capitalization.
At the time of rebalancing, the weight of any one stock can’t go over 33%, and the total weight of the top three stocks must stay below 62%.

How Often Do Stocks in NIFTY Metal Change?

The Nifty Metal Index is reviewed and rebalanced semi-annually, with cut-off dates on January 31 and July 31 each year. The review process uses average data from the preceding six months to assess stock eligibility. Any changes to the index composition are announced at least four weeks in advance, ensuring transparency and giving investors time to adjust their portfolios.
