About NIFTY Pharma

The Nifty Pharma Index is a sectoral index on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) that tracks the performance of 20 leading pharmaceutical companies listed in India. Launched on July 1, 2005, with a base date of January 1, 2001, the index offers investors and analysts a focused view of the Indian pharmaceutical sector. It features some of the largest and most liquid pharma stocks that play a crucial role in both domestic and international healthcare markets. The index helps monitor how the sector responds to factors like regulatory changes, drug approvals, global demand shifts, and currency movements.

What is NIFTY Pharma Based On?

Nifty Pharma is calculated using the free-float market capitalization method, meaning only publicly tradable shares (excluding promoter-held and locked-in shares) are considered. The index value reflects the total free-float market capitalization of its 20 constituent stocks relative to a fixed base market capitalization. This approach ensures the index accurately represents the investable portion of the pharma sector and captures its real-time market movements.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in NIFTY Pharma

Stocks included in the Nifty Pharma Index must meet the following conditions:

Companies must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review. If fewer than 20 eligible pharma stocks are available, additional companies are chosen from the top 800 based on market capitalization and turnover.
Only companies classified under the pharmaceutical sector are considered for inclusion.
Stocks must have traded on at least 90% of trading days over the past six months and should have a minimum listing history of one month.
The final list of 20 stocks is selected based on free-float market capitalization, with preference given to those available in the NSE Futures & Options segment.
To ensure diversification, no single stock can have a weight exceeding 33%, and the combined weight of the top three stocks cannot exceed 62% at the time of rebalancing.

How Often Do Stocks in NIFTY Pharma Change?

The Nifty Pharma Index is reviewed and rebalanced semi-annually, with cut-off dates on January 31 and July 31 each year. The review process uses average data from the preceding six months to determine stock eligibility and rankings. Any changes to the index composition are announced at least four weeks in advance and are implemented on the last trading day of March and September.

Who Maintains the NIFTY Pharma Index?

The Nifty Pharma Index is owned and managed by NSE Indices Limited, which is a part of the National Stock Exchange of India. NSE Indices handles the index calculation, periodic reviews, and data dissemination. A dedicated committee oversees the index methodology, ensuring transparency, fairness, and alignment with global standards.
