Things to Know
Before Using SLBM

What happenes to your rented or borrowed stocks?

Once you rent stocks and the order is successful, they move from your Demat account to the Demat account of the user who has borrowed the same from you via the exchange.

Every rental contract has an expiration date. On the expiry date, the stocks exit from the borrower and are sent back by the exchange via clearing corporation to your demat account.

Usually, it takes 24-48 hours for the stocks to reflect back in your demat account after the expiry date of the rental contract. Dhan has a dedicated Rental Portfolio where you can keep track of all the stocks that you have rented or borrowed.

What happens in case of default?

If the borrower defaults and fails to return the stocks, the margin blocked in the borrower’s demat account will be debited. The lender will then be fully compensated either by receiving equivalent stocks through an auction or by having the equivalent value credited directly to their demat account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions on your mind? Don't worry we have the answers!

There are no brokerage charges that you have to pay while renting stocks. You just need to pay DP charges (+GST) for moving shares from your demat account.
Renting Stocks lets you earn extra income from shares you already own, or borrow shares for trading strategies like short selling. You set the rental period and fee upfront.

Key Benefits:
For Lenders (Rent Out Your Stocks):
  • Extra income from shares you're holding long-term
  • Zero risk - clearing corporation (NSCCL) guarantees protection
  • Keep all rights - still get dividends and voting rights
For Borrowers (Borrow Stocks):
  • Short sell without owning the stock
  • Avoid delivery penalties on short positions
  • Arbitrage opportunities between cash and futures markets
Why Choose Rent Stocks:
  • 500+ stocks available for lending/borrowing
  • Guaranteed settlement through clearing corporation
  • Flexible tenures up to 12 months
  • Transparent pricing with upfront fee agreement

Only stocks approved by the stock exchange are available for Renting and Borrowing. These are usually popular, frequently traded stocks. The list changes based on trading activity and risk factors. You can see which of your stocks are available for renting from your existing demat holdings in the “Offer” and "Rent Stocks" Section

No Pledged shares cannot be further rented out. Your shares must be "free" in your account, meaning they're not:
  • Pledged for loans
  • Locked for other transactions
  • Already committed elsewhere
Only completely available shares can be rented out.
Yes, you can demand your shares back early by placing a "recall," order. But success depends on contract terms and market availability.

What is a recall?
A recall is when you (the lender) demand your shares back before the contract expiry.

What happens when you demand a recall?
  • You place a recall order through the Dhan
  • The system tries to find another lender willing to take over the remaining contract period at the price you are willing to pay
  • If successful, your shares are returned and the new lender takes over
  • In case of unavailability of another lender you will be obligated to wait till expiry for the stocks to be credited back to the account
Important notes:
  • Your recall demand's success depends on availability of other lenders in the market
  • The borrower continues to use the shares until the expiry date
  • Not all contracts allow early recall - some are binding until expiry
SLBM operates on a T+1 settlement cycle with the following process:

For Borrowers:
  • Securities are automatically debited from the demat account one day before expiry, after-market hours close
  • This ensures timely return of borrowed securities to complete the contract
For Lenders:
  • Securities are credited back to the lender's demat account one day after the expiry date
  • This completes the full renting cycle and restores ownership to the original lender

SLBM contracts are settled on the first Tuesday of every month, and in case of holidays the expiry is shifted to the next working day.

Rental income is treated as business income and taxed according to your tax bracket. Consult a tax advisor for specific guidance.
