Soybean Futures Drop Below $10 as US-China Trade Truce Extension Delays Purchase Deals
Soybean prices fell below $10 a bushel after President Trump announced a 90-day extension of the US-China trade truce, with trade restrictions now set for early November if no deal is reached. November delivery contracts dropped 1% as of 11:45 a.m. Singapore time, reversing Monday's 2.4% gain that followed Trump's call for China to quadruple its soybean purchases. Agricultural economist Dennis Voznesenski noted that prices initially rose on purchase expectations but declined as the truce extension showed no substantial progress. China, the world's largest soybean buyer and typically America's biggest customer in a trade worth over $12 billion in 2024, has not booked any US soybean cargoes for the September season as of late July. All major grains declined following the announcement, with soybeans hit hardest at 1.2% lower to $9.995 a bushel, while wheat dropped 0.6% to $5.1175 and corn fell 0.8% to $4.045 a bushel.
