The calculator then estimates the future value of your investment. This is a valuable tool for planning your investments and getting an idea about what kind of returns you can expect to see on them.

How are Returns in TATA SIP Calculated?

The TATA SIP calculates revenue by using XIRR (extended internal rate of return). XIRR is an Excel formula that computes the interest rate for a series of cash flows that occur at irregular intervals.

The XIRR formula is as follows:

=XIRR(values, dates, [guess])

Where:

  • values represent the series of cash flows.
  • dates are the specific dates that correspond to each cash flow.
  • guess is an initial estimate of what the IRR will be.

This formula uses an iterative method to calculate XIRR. It starts off with a guess and then repeatedly does the calculation until it gets within 0.000001% (accurate). This can be used to determine the value of an investment over time or whether a project with irregularly timed cash flows is viable.
