About NIFTY Energy

Nifty Energy is a sectoral index introduced by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on July 1, 2005, to track the performance of India’s top 40 energy companies. It includes firms engaged in petroleum, natural gas, electricity, and other energy-related businesses. The index serves as a key barometer for the energy sector’s health, helping investors and analysts monitor industry trends, market sentiment, and sectoral growth over time.

What is NIFTY Energy Based On?

Calculated using the free-float market capitalization method, the Nifty Energy Index includes only those shares that are available for public trading, leaving out promoter-owned and locked-in shares. Its index level reflects the total market value of these stocks relative to a fixed base market cap. This ensures that the index stays focused on the actual investable part of India’s energy sector, making it more relevant for investors and fund managers.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in NIFTY Energy

Stocks in the Nifty Energy index are selected on the following criteria:
  1. Companies must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review.
  2. If there are fewer than 10 eligible energy stocks, additional companies are chosen from the top 800 based on average daily turnover and market capitalization.
  3. Only companies classified under the energy sector, including oil, gas, power, and energy-related capital goods, are considered.
  4. Stocks must have traded on at least 90% of trading days over the past six months.
  5. Each company must have a minimum listing history of one month as of the cutoff date.
  6. The final list of 40 companies is selected based on free-float market capitalization.
  7. To ensure diversification, no stock can carry more than 33% weight, and the top three stocks together can’t exceed 62% during rebalancing.

How Often Do Stocks in NIFTY Energy Change?

Nifty Energy is reviewed and rebalanced twice a year, with cut-off dates set for January 31 and July 31. The review process uses average data from the six months leading up to each cut-off date. Any changes to the index are announced at least four weeks in advance and take effect on the last trading day of March and September.

Who Maintains the NIFTY Energy ?
