About Sensex

Sensex is short for the Stock Exchange Sensitive Index. It is the benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which is one of the oldest stock exchanges in Asia. Launched on 1st Jan, 1986, it was designed to provide a clear and reliable measure of the Indian stock market's performance. The index comprises 30 of the largest and most actively traded companies listed on the BSE. It serves as an important indicator of market sentiment, helping investors assess the health and trends of the Indian economy.

What is Sensex Based On?

The Sensex is based on the performance of the top 30 large companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) of India. These companies are selected from different sectors and represent some of the most actively traded and financially strong businesses in the country.
The Sensex is calculated using the free-float market capitalization method, which means companies with a larger market value and more publicly available shares have a greater impact on the index.
This approach helps the Sensex accurately reflect market trends and investor sentiment. As a result, it acts as a reliable indicator of overall market performance and offers insight into how India’s leading companies are doing.

Selection Criteria for Stocks in Sensex

The Sensex comprises 30 companies that are chosen through a well-defined process, based on the following selection criteria:
  1. The company must be listed on the BSE for at least 6 months
  2. It should rank high by average six-month free-float market capitalization
  3. The stock must have high liquidity and consistent trading activity
  4. The company should generate substantial revenue from core business activities
  5. Sectoral balance is considered to ensure broad market representation

How Often Do Stocks in Sensex Change?

Stocks in the Sensex are reviewed and can be changed twice a year, typically in June and December, during the semi-annual rebalancing conducted by the S&P BSE Index Committee. During these reviews, companies are evaluated based on factors like free-float market capitalization, trading volume, liquidity, and sector representation.
If a stock no longer meets the required criteria, it may be replaced with another stock that better reflects current market conditions. In addition to these scheduled reviews, interim changes can also take place if a company undergoes major corporate actions such as mergers, acquisitions, delistings, or significant regulatory issues.

Who Maintains the Sensex?

The Sensex is maintained by Asia Index Private Limited, a joint venture between BSE Ltd. and S&P Dow Jones Indices. It is calculated and published in real-time using global indexing standards. The S&P BSE Index Committee oversees the review and selection of stocks, typically done twice a year.
Day-to-day operations, such as index calculation and corporate action adjustments, are handled by the Index Cell at BSE. This structure ensures transparency, accuracy, and global credibility. The collaboration combines BSE’s local market expertise with S&P Dow Jones' international indexing methodology.

What Sensex Tells Us?

The Sensex reflects the overall mood and direction of the Indian stock market. Tracking the performance of 30 of the largest and most actively traded companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange gives investors a clear sense of how the market is behaving.
A rising Sensex typically indicates strong corporate performance, positive investor sentiment, and confidence in the economy. On the other hand, a falling Sensex may signal market uncertainty, weak business results, or broader economic concerns.
In essence, the Sensex serves as a reliable indicator of market trends and economic outlook in India.

Is Sensex a Benchmark?

Yes, the Sensex is a widely accepted benchmark index in India. It reflects the performance of 30 top companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and serves as a standard for comparing the returns of large-cap mutual funds, ETFs, and other investment products. Many passive investment funds are designed to replicate the Sensex, offering returns that closely follow the index.
