China Lowers Ultra-Luxury Car Tax Threshold, Impacting 54% of Market Including JLR
China's Ministry of Finance reduced the threshold for a 10% consumption tax on ultra-luxury cars from CNY 1.3 million to CNY 900,000, effective July 20, 2025. The policy impacts 54% of the ultra-luxury segment, which recorded 37,000 unit sales in the first half of 2025, down 49% year-on-year. The tax now includes battery electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles, and new energy vehicles, applied at the retail stage. Mercedes-Benz leads the ultra-luxury market with 43% share, followed by Jaguar Land Rover at 23% and Porsche at 18%. JLR faces significant challenges as many Range Rover and Defender models fall within the newly taxed CNY 900,000-1.3 million price range. The tax increase is projected to raise costs by 10%, potentially delaying consumer purchases. Foreign brands including Porsche and Maserati have introduced significant discounts to maintain market share. China contributes a single-digit percentage to JLR's revenue but is critical to its brand positioning. Second-hand luxury cars remain exempt from the tax.

Fresh slippages decreased to 21.3 billion rupees from 26.5 billion rupees. Gross NPA ratio improved to 2.69% from 2.94% quarter-over-quarter, while net NPA ratio fell to 0.63% from 0.70%. Interest earned increased to 310 billion rupees from 287 billion rupees year-over-year.
Indian Bank Reports Strong Q1 Performance with 24% Jump in Net Profit
Indian Bank delivered robust Q1 results with net profit rising to 29.7 billion rupees from 24 billion rupees year-over-year, marking a significant 24% increase. Interest income grew to 163 billion rupees compared to 150.4 billion rupees in the same period last year. The bank's asset quality showed improvement with gross non-performing assets (GNPA) declining to 3.01% from 3.09% in the previous quarter, while net non-performing assets (NNPA) decreased to 0.18% from 0.19% quarter-over-quarter.

Four Indian Auto Stocks to Watch Amid Potential US-EU Trade Deal
Reports suggest the US is close to signing a trade deal with the European Union, potentially imposing a 15% tariff similar to its Japan agreement. The EU may accept this 15% levy to avoid escalation to the 30% tariff threatened by US President Donald Trump. If implemented, car tariffs could drop from the current 27.5% to 15%, benefiting European auto exports to the US. Four Indian stocks positioned to benefit include: Tata Motors, whose Jaguar Land Rover operations in Slovakia could see reduced tariffs (33% of JLR volumes come from US markets); Samvardhana Motherson, which supplies to German and Mexican OEM plants exporting to the US (6-7% US market exposure); Sona BLW, with 43% of revenue from the US market; and Bharat Forge, where US exports represent 35-40% of standalone exports.
