About Gold Rate Calculator

What Is a Gold Rate Calculator?

A gold rate calculator is a tool that computes the total cost of buying gold by factoring in the base gold price, making charges, and applicable GST, not just the market rate you see in the news.

The number published every morning as "today's gold rate" is only the raw material price. The actual amount you pay at a jewellery counter is always higher, and a gold rate calculator helps you calculate that amount.

The Dhan Gold Rate Calculator covers 25+ cities across India, supports all three major gold purities (24K, 22K, 18K), and lets you adjust making charges and toggle GST on or off, so you can compare scenarios in real time.

How to Use This Calculator

You can use this calculator in a few simple steps:

Step 1: Select purity and city

Choose the gold purity (24K, 22K or 18K) and the city from which you are purchasing. The price of gold is slightly different from city to city due to logistics and jeweller association pricing. The calculator fetches the current rate of the combination you have selected.

Step 2: Input weight and making charges

Enter the grams of gold that you are willing to purchase. Next, enter the percentage of making charges your jeweller is quoting. Making charges typically range from 3% to 20%.

Step 3: Toggle GST and get the total price

Slide the toggle to the GST option to see the total cost, including the base gold value, making charges, and GST.

What is the Difference Between 24K, 22K and 18K Gold?

The number before the 'K' tells you how much of the metal is pure gold. 24K is the purest form commercially available. 22K and 18K are alloys made with gold mixed with metals such as copper or silver to improve hardness and durability for jewellery making.

KaratGold ContentPurityCommon Use
24K24 out of 24 parts gold99.9%Gold coins, bars, Gold ETFs
22K22 out of 24 parts gold91.6%Most gold jewellery sold in India
18K18 out of 24 parts gold75%Diamond-studded jewellery, luxury watches

What are Making Charges?

Making charges are the additional costs that jewellers impose on the conversion of raw gold into finished jewellery. These are not included in the gold price. Making charges are often calculated as a percentage of the total gold price.

For buyers who want gold as an investment rather than to wear as jewellery, digital gold investments (Gold ETFs, Gold mutual funds, Gold Vault) are a better choice as they don't carry making charges and significantly improve the value-to-cost ratio.

How GST Applies to Your Gold Purchase

In India's GST regime, the purchase of gold is subject to two GST costs, one for the gold value and another on making charges. For example, if you buy 10 grams of 22K gold jewellery for ₹13,738 per gram and the making charges are 10%, then the total cost of jewellery is:

  • Base gold value = ₹1,37,383
  • Making charges (10%) = ₹13,738
  • GST on gold (3%) = ₹4,121.49
  • GST on making charges (5%) = ₹686.9
  • Total you pay = ₹1,55,929

So, in the ₹1,55,929 total price you pay, ₹1,37,383 is for the gold value, while the remaining ₹18,546 is for additional costs like making charges and GST.

What Affects Gold Prices in India?

Gold prices in India are influenced by several global and domestic factors like:

  • International Spot Price (LBMA): Gold is priced globally in USD per troy ounce, with LBMA setting benchmark prices twice daily. Gold prices in India follow these trends.
  • USD/INR Exchange Rate: As India imports the majority of its gold needs and globally gold is priced in dollars, USD/INR exchange rates directly impact domestic gold prices.
  • MCX Futures & IBJA Rates: MCX gold futures are the benchmark in India, and IBJA publishes daily benchmarks for jewellers to use for retail pricing.
  • RBI & Central Bank Policies: The interest rate policy of the RBI and the global central banks have a direct impact on gold prices, as gold is a non-yielding asset whose opportunity cost rises or falls with borrowing costs and interest rate changes.
  • Import Duty: On gold imports, the government charges an import duty (15%), which is embedded in the domestic gold prices passed on to the gold buyers.
  • Geopolitical & Economic Events: Gold acts as a safe-haven asset during geopolitical tensions, equity volatility, or financial uncertainty, driving gold demand and prices higher.

How to invest in Gold with Dhan

Knowing today's gold rate is useful when buying jewellery. But if your goal is investment, physical gold comes with costs like making charges, 3% GST, storage risk, and purity uncertainty. However, if you invest in digital alternatives, these issues are eliminated. You can invest in gold on Dhan through the following instruments:

Gold ETFs

Gold ETFs track 24K physical gold prices, and they trade just like stocks on stock exchanges during trading hours. Investing in Gold ETFs on Dhan comes with zero brokerage on delivery trades and no making charges. Additionally, it also eliminates storage issues, as your investments are held securely in electronic form within your Demat account.

Gold Mutual Funds

Gold mutual funds are Fund of Funds (FoF) that invest in gold ETFs and related gold assets, offering gold price exposure at the end-of-day Net Asset Value (NAV). On Dhan, you can invest in gold mutual funds with zero commission and also set up an automated SIP starting from as low as ₹100.

Gold Vault

Dhan Gold Vault lets you buy gold and silver at live MCX prices and store it in SEBI-registered vaults. It also offers you the option to get doorstep delivery when you need physical gold.

Gold Futures on MCX

MCX gold futures offer leveraged price exposure to gold price movements. Additionally, Dhan offers advanced charting tools and real-time data to monitor these positions, making it ideal for commodity traders who want to capitalise on gold price movements without holding physical metal.
